Project Spotlight: City of Elizabeth – 6th Street Park

Date: November 5, 2024

SCE provided consulting engineering, landscape architecture, design, and construction support services to the City of Elizabeth for the renovation of 6th Street Park. The existing neighborhood park located between 6th Street, Fulton Street, and Franklin Street, was transformed into a top-of-the-line recreational facility. This initiative was driven by a clear need for enhanced recreational opportunities in the area, identified through community surveys and feedback from local residents. The renovation aimed to address concerns about safety, accessibility, and the lack of diverse play equipment for various age groups. By prioritizing these elements, the City sought to create a facility that not only meets the current needs of the community but is also adaptable for future generations, fostering health, social interaction, and environmental stewardship within the City of Elizabeth.

Unique Design:

This project stands out due to its innovative sports-themed design and strong focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle. By honoring a beloved coach in the community, the park integrates meaningful elements that resonate with local residents. Unique features include a custom baseball graphic at the park entrance, a football-themed splash pad complete with goal-post splash buckets and spray fountains designed as football markers, and playground structures that showcase the City of Elizabeth school mascot.

The layout encourages unstructured play with an open synthetic turf lawn, while fitness equipment and custom entrance portals featuring a laser-cut banner in memory of Coach Singley add to the park’s distinctive character.

Accessibility is a key aspect, with sidewalks designed for all users, enabling a walking and exercise circuit. Signage marks the distance for laps around the park, complemented by five exercise stations strategically placed for a full-body workout, all featuring accessible components. This thoughtful design fosters community engagement and promotes active living for individuals of all abilities.

Community Involvement

The completion of this project has significantly enhanced community engagement, receiving an overwhelmingly positive reception from residents. Throughout the development process, neighbors demonstrated keen interest and enthusiasm, frequently inquiring about the park’s status and anticipated opening date. Since its official opening in August 2024, the park has attracted a diverse range of visitors eager to utilize its various amenities.

The park’s appeal spans all age groups, accommodating toddlers at the splash pad and playground, while providing fitness stations for seniors. This versatility not only ensures that the park serves as a gathering place for families and community members but also fosters a culture of health and wellness.

Residents have expressed their appreciation for the thoughtful design that maximizes the use of the relatively small space, offering a wide array of activities that enhance usability. Overall, the park has become a valued asset to the community, promoting physical activity and strengthening social connections among residents.
