2025 NJRPA – Excellence In Design Award

Category: Playground

Award Description: The purpose of the NJRPA Awards Program is to honor and identify dedicated leaders, employees, and volunteers in the field of Parks and Recreation, and to recognize the State’s outstanding Recreation and Park agencies for excellence in programming, publicity and facility design. The goal of the Awards Program is to focus State attention on the achievement of Park and Recreation agencies, to recognize the continuing efforts of staff and volunteers, and to acknowledge support extended by member agencies.

Project Overview: What started as a $1.3M renovation project has transformed the corner of 6th, Fulton, and Franklin Streets into a sports-themed community hub that’s bursting with energy, inclusivity, and neighborhood pride. Inspired by Miller Playground but shaped by community voices, the design went above and beyond to deliver amenities everyone can enjoy. Driven by community feedback and a clear need for improved recreational amenities, the initiative focused on enhancing safety, accessibility, and inclusivity for all age groups.

From the baseball graphic entrance to the football-themed splash pad, synthetic turf play lawn, and equipment showcasing the City’s school mascot, the park is packed with fun details. Dedicated to Coach Singley, the space features a memorial banner and fitness stations tailored for users of all abilities, with accessible walking circuits and distance markers.

Funded by a NJDEP Green Acres grant and local contributions, the park officially opened in August 2024—and it’s been a home run ever since. Whether it’s toddlers splashing, teens playing pickup games, or neighbors gathering for fitness and fresh air, this park is bringing people together and scoring big for community wellness. Thoughtful use of limited space and inclusive design have made it a beloved community hub, significantly enhancing engagement, wellness, and neighborhood pride.
