Jesse Allen Park Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Date: November 4, 2022

Congratulations to the City of Newark on the final renovation and revitalization of the Jesse Allen Park! SCE Team Members along with City Representatives, members of the Trust for Public Land, the NJDEP, and local community members attended the Ribbon Cutting ceremony this week to celebrate this achievement.

SCE was proud to be a part of this noteworthy project for the City. As NJDEP Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette said, “Open Spaces don’t just give us a place to recreate, they spur investments in our larger communities”. With the Boys & Girls Club of Newark Clubhouse located right next door, this turns what was once a vacant, run-down space into a brand NEW facility for children and adults alike to get out, be active, and create positive opportunities and programs for involvement in the community.

The park was originally opened in 1979 and named in honor of City Councilmember, Jesse Allen, who stood for building community.

About The Project:

SCE provided surveying, engineering, planning, landscape architectural, and park design services for the completion of design and construction management for Phase III. This project consisted of final improvements to the park’s athletic fields, as well as ancillary improvements to other areas. The improvements consisted of the redevelopment and upgrade of the park’s natural turf athletic fields to synthetic turf, replacement of perimeter fencing, new restroom and storage building design and construction, removal of bleacher and bleacher pad, landscaping plan, and inspection of other areas of the park to develop a list of recommended repairs and improvements.

Heat mitigation strategies were incorporated into the synthetic turf design. SCE researched and provided alternative infills for the field, which will reduce anticipated “heat island” effect, a common occurrence in urbanized areas due to structures re-emitting the sun’s heat at a stronger level than natural landscapes. This project also incorporates Green Infrastructure with a stormwater management design included to collect runoff from the synthetic turf field.
