2024 Municipal Project of the Year Awards

Category G Municipal Design of Infrastructure Project (All Non-Park/Rec Projects) – Consultants

Second-Place Recipient

Project Engineer: Joseph Lakner, PE

The Borough of Essex Fells PFAS Improvement Project involved installing a Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) system to remove PFAS compounds and ensure compliance with EPA regulations at its Main Treatment Facility. The system, which treats water from 13 wells at an average rate of 3,000 gpm, was designed with scalability in mind, allowing future capacity expansion to 4,000 gpm. The new treatment system, housed in a 3,825-sf building, includes high-capacity vertical turbine pumps, pre-treatment filters, GAC systems, and chlorinators, ensuring a reliable, safe, and efficient water supply for the communities it serves.

This project was funded through the New Jersey Water Bank program (NJWB) and secured $1M of principal forgiveness for state fiscal year 2023.
